Wise men seeking the King of the Jews traveled from the East to bring treasures to Emmanuel, Christ with us. These were gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh; no doubt valuable gifts given in worship , ascribing worth to the Newborn King!
Being told by the Angel of The Lord in a dream, Joseph took his family to Egypt to avoid the slaughter of infant boys ages 2 years and younger. Having gold, frankincense and myrrh, this young family now had the means to purchase resources needed for their journey; food, shelter and other needs while they tarried until the death Herod. How exciting to see that the giving of these gifts to Jesus, literally helped further the cause of Christ!
Later in Christ’s earthly ministry, He teaches us in the Sermon on the Mount, that we are not to lay up treasures on earth because moth and rust will destroy them or thieves will steal them. Rather, He tells us to lay up treasures for ourselves in Heaven. Jesus uses the same word for treasure,( thesauros in Greek) as is used for the treasure that the wise men brought Him as a child- it means real, physical, valuable treasure! Think about that for a moment; as we give our gifts to Jesus (like the wise men), offerings and special giving , He stores them up as real treasure in our heavenly home and we have the privilege to further the cause of Christ!
